The Heart of Bowen

The Bowen Technique is primarily a remedial therapy tool.  It differs from many other forms of therapy in that it does not attempt to inflict the will of the therapist or a specific outcome onto the client.  Instead, it offers the body an opportunity to restore structural integrity.

Bowen is effective and versatile and can offer relief for many conditions.  It is suitable for all, from babies to athletes, during pregnancy, the elderly, and the very frail.  No force is used or needed.  A series of gentle, rolling type moves are made at precise points on the body.  Moves stimulate the soft tissue/fascia of the body releasing stress at a very deep level via its calming effect on the nervous system.  By working on soft tissue and fascia together, Bowen can influence the way the body structure works helping to relieve pain.  This approach often results in lasting improvements on the body’s alignment and balance, helping resolve pain issues, injuries/sports injuries, and general body aches and pains.

The superficial fascia of the body delves deeper, wrapping itself around underlying muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones and joints, and the body’s internal organs.  It can be hard or even impossible to palate these deeper areas and this is where Bowen has the potential to be very successful, taking the stimulus from the superficial fascia deep into the body without using any force or manipulation.  Bowen triggers an integrated response including emotional healing, relaxation, balancing of hormones, improving respiratory, digestive, and reproductive conditions, stimulating the circulatory system, the nervous system, and the lymphatic system.

Breaks between the Bowen moves are an important part of the treatment. Sometimes the therapist will actually leave the room. This allows the body the space and time to relax and mediate the parasympathetic nervous system and to establish that something has happened and that some kind of reaction is needed.

"Between stimulus and response, there is a space...

In that space is our power to choose our response.

In our response, lies our growth and our freedom."
