Red Light Therapy

Have you ever noticed how calming the light feels at sunrise or sunset?

Those warm red tones are not just visually beautiful — they contain wavelengths of light that interact with the body in interesting ways. Scientists have been studying these wavelengths for decades, and this research has led to the development of Red Light Therapy, also known as photobiomodulation.

At FlexPoint Sports Therapy, we use the FlexBeam device by Recharge Health as an optional add-on to hands-on therapy sessions to support recovery and tissue health.

What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate natural biological processes within the body.

These wavelengths penetrate the skin and are absorbed by structures inside the cell known as mitochondria.

Mitochondria are often called the “powerhouses of the cell” because they produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate) — the energy source that fuels cellular repair and regeneration.

By supporting mitochondrial activity, red light therapy may help the body:

• Increase cellular energy production
• Support tissue repair and regeneration
• Improve local circulation
• Reduce inflammation
• Support recovery following physical stress or injury

Why We Use It in Sports Therapy

At FlexPoint, our primary focus is always hands-on treatment and movement-based recovery.

Red light therapy is used alongside manual therapy techniquesto support the body’s natural healing processes.

It may be helpful for:

• Muscle tightness and fatigue
• Tendon or ligament irritation
• Joint discomfort
• Recovery between training sessions
• Persistent soft tissue tension

The gentle warming effect can also help tissues relax, making manual treatment more comfortable and effective.

How It Works in the Body

Research suggests that red and near-infrared light may influence several biological systems:

  • Cellular Energy (ATP Production)

  • Light absorbed by mitochondria can support increased cellular energy production, which helps power repair processes.

  • Circulation

  • Red light may stimulate the release of nitric oxide, which helps blood vessels relax and improve micro-circulation.

  • Inflammation Response

  • Some studies suggest photobiomodulation may help regulate inflammatory processes within tissues.

  • Nervous System Regulation

  • Light therapy may also support relaxation of the nervous system, which can be helpful when treating chronic muscle tension.

What a Session Looks Like

During a treatment session, the FlexBeam device is placed comfortably over the treatment area for a short period while you relax.

It produces a gentle warming sensation and most clients find it very comfortable.

It is typically used for 10–20 minutes alongside a sports therapy treatment.

Important to Know

Red light therapy is not a standalone medical treatmentand is not intended to diagnose or cure medical conditions.

At FlexPoint Sports Therapy it is used as a supportive recovery tool alongside hands-on therapy, movement advice, and rehabilitation strategies.

A Modern Recovery Tool

Recovery is not just about treating symptoms — it's about helping the body restore balance, function and resilience.

Red light therapy is simply one more tool we can use to help support that process.
